The Genoa National Fish Hatchery, Wisconsin, is celebrating 75 years of aquatic resource conservation this year with a celebration planned for August 8th.

From its roots as a Works Progress Administration project in the Great Depression,  the hatchery's programs have evolved to include new initiatives such as endangered mussel recovery, lake sturgeon restoration, coaster brook trout restoration, and its traditional roles such as fulfilling fish production needs on Federal, Tribal, and state lands.

Many river partners are helping celebrate the event, with the Upper Mississippi River National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, the Corps of Engineers, the Friends of the Upper Mississippi River, and a host of others that are dedicated to not only making it a day to remember but to celebrate the River Region.

A host of historical interpreters and river musicians will be on hand to tell us the story of the pearl button industry, the paddleboats, and the entire Mississippi River story from prehistoric times to today.  Many children’s activities will be ongoing, including a fishing booth, and other participatory activities.

A Friends Group sponsored catfish fry is also being planned for the day, with a host of dignitaries being invited to help us dedicate the facility for the next 75 years.  The event is open to the public, and all are welcome to help us celebrate the River and the great area that we have the good fortune to enjoy on a daily basis.
