The Nature ConservancyKayaks at Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, May 9, 2007
Print Friendly Version
The Partnership between The Nature Conservancy and Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge dates back to the establishment of the refuge.  The first piece of land to establish the refuge was donated by TNC in 1973.  The 49,097 acre tract was donated to TNC from the Union Camp Corporation.  Since then the refuge has collaborated with TNC on major facility development and resource management issues within the area they donated.  Today the refuge partners with TNC on a variety of issues including fire management, land protection and resource management.

As part of this ongoing partnership, the refuge hosted a tour and kayaking trip for The Nature Conservancy.  Refuge Manager Suzanne Baird provided an introduction and orientation to the refuge for the participants highlighting the import role the refuge plays in the Great Dismal Swamp ecosystem.

After the introduction, thirteen participants enjoyed a brief tour of the refuge and an afternoon of kayaking.  The weather was threatening earlier with a thunderstorm cell passing over Lake Drummond just prior to the beginning of the trip.  Once the storm passed, the rest of the afternoon was picture perfect and the kayakers enjoyed a beautiful trip on Lake Drummond, the heart of Great Dismal Swamp NWR.
