KENAI: Teachers Go Back to School in the Summer
Alaska Region, June 18, 2007
Print Friendly Version
As summer officially approaches and school has long since let out, 24 local teachers opted to go back to school for two days to learn about outdoor education.  The course, titled, "Journey to the Heart of the Kenai Watershed:  An Education and Stewardship Workshop on the Ecology and Culture of the Kenai Peninsula" was hosted by Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and The Kenai Peninsula Ecological and Cultural Educators, a new group of more than 20 agencies and organizations that offer natural resource and cultural education programs for K-12 students.  Grants to cover the cost of the workshop were provided by the Alaska Conservation Foundation and ConocoPhillips Alaska.  The workshop included classroom and field exercises on such things as salmon life cycle, water quality lake monitoring, birding along the Kenai River, and invasive species management.  Available curricula were shared with the educators and local cultural history complimented the biological information provided.  The Kenai Peninsula College offered one credit for successful completion of the 17-hour program.
