KENAI: New PartnershipDesigned to Protect People and Bears
Alaska Region, June 13, 2007
Print Friendly Version
The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge has joined with the Chugach National Forest, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Alaska Department of Natural Resources, and the Kenaitze Indian Tribe in a partnership to increase coordination and management successes at the popular public use area along the confluence of the Russian and Kenai Rivers.  High on the list of things to accomplish is increased outreach and education and management tools to reduce human-bear conflicts in the area.  This season there is an increased presence of paid and volunteer employees during the busy fishing season, which started June 11.  New signs and recorded messages are also being employed as well as both advisory and regulatory guidelines on how to handle food items and fish.  The group formed over the winter and recently completed a charter that will direct the collaboration.  For a related story and video, go to http://www.ktuu.com/global/story.asp?s=6644094
