On Saturday, June 2, 2007 46 kids from ages 2 to 15 years old participated in a fun-filled morning of fishing at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge’s 16th Annual Youth Fishing Derby. The derby was also registered as a Wal-Mart Kids All-American Fishing Derby. The event, held at Ringneck Marsh, featured free fishing, a casting contest, and door prizes. During the event kids could also visit the activity table to make a “food chain”, test their fish IQ and look at microscopic animals. Every child in attendance received a goody bag with special souvenirs from the event.

Winners of the Casting Contest were each awarded a certificate and a Zebco rod and reel set for their display of casting skill.

Trophies and certificates were awarded for the three biggest fish in three age groups: 7 and under, 8-12 years, and 13 – 17 years. A door prize drawing of a variety of fishing related items completed the day’s event with enough prizes so that everyone who stayed to the end walked away with a prize.

The Derby was wonderfully supported by the Friends of Iroquois NWR, Wal-Mart, and Tony Scime’s Tackle and Variety, Buffalo.  Additional support was received from refuge volunteers who ran the registration table, measured and recorded the fish and ran the casting contest and activities.
