Biologists from the Green Bay Field office and East Lansing Field Office participated in the first spring meeting to coordinate piping plover recovery efforts at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Lake Superior in Wisconsin.

The piping plover is a small endangered shorebird that has been extirpated from much of its historical range in the Great Lakes, but intensive recovery efforts in nearby Michigan have helped the plover population grow and return to some historic nesting areas such as the Apostle Islands.

Participants from the Fish and Wildlife Service, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and National Park Service met to discuss survey and protection plans for nesting plovers at the Lakeshore and surrounding areas.

The meeting was followed by training on piping plover biology and recovery techniques such as the installation of predator exclosures.
