Moosehorn National Wildlife RefugeHosts Wagner Forest Management Ltd Spring Training Workshop
Northeast Region, May 10, 2007
Print Friendly Version

Moosehorn hosted Wagner Forest Management Ltd's annual spring training workshop for 25 of their Maine foresters, May 10, 2007 at the refuge's YCC building.  The session covered outdoor survival, deer wintering areas, and an overview of the Maine Natural Areas Program.  In addition, refuge biologist Andy Weik discussed the history of research and management at Moosehorn, forest management for woodcock and other early successional forest species, and the Director's Northern Forest Woodcock Initiative.  We also discussed how emerging markets for wood pellets and tree biomass may affect early successional forest species across the Atlantic Northern Forest, and the effects on young forest habitat of some of Wagner's current silvicultural practices.  Wagner Forest Management Ltd. manages over 3 million acres of forest land across New England, the Appalachian Region, and Ontario, Canada.  Moosehorn hopes to continue dialogue with and outreach to Wagner and other managers of forest in the region to assure management that will benefit high priority wildlife species.
