LAKE CHAMPLAIN OFFICE CONDUCTS LANDLOCKED SALMON SMOLT TRAPPING

A project to trap out-migrating landlocked Atlantic salmon smolts is underway again this field season by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife.  The study attempts to capture salmon smolts -- planted as fry -- migrating to Lake Champlain.  The new rotary screw trap was acquired in a cooperative effort last summer, to capture salmon on their way to Lake Champlain from a tributary of the Winooski River in Vermont.  The Winooski River is one of Lake Champlain's largest tributaries and supports a run of fall-migrating landlocked salmon.  Salmon are provided upstream fish passage over the lower three dams, and fry stocking in the upper watershed supplements smolt stocking in the lower river.  Fry stocking helps salmon to imprint on the river where they are stocked and increases the numbers of adults that will return to spawn.  The Winooski River is a key component of the Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Management Cooperative's salmonid restoration program.  This study will provide essential survival information to help restore salmon and continue the development of Lake Champlain's salmon fishery.  Contact Nick Staats, USFWS, Essex, Vermont, (802)879-5679 for additional information.
