KENAI: RefugeHelps Kids Learn About Water Safety
Alaska Region, May 15, 2007
Print Friendly Version
Alaskan summers all too often spell disaster each year as young and old alike flock to local streams and lakes to boat, fish, and camp only to find themselves falling into icy waters.  While many of the accidents can be avoided, most of the corresponding deaths are completely preventable .  Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, working with other area organizations and schools, offered a "Safe Kids Water Safety" event on May 5 at Skyview High School in Soldotna.  The event was attended by over 100 kids of varying ages; 92 purchased life jackets (at the minimal cost of $10 each).  In addition to learning about water safety, how to properly fit a lifejacket, signs and treatment of hypothermia, how to get in and out of a boat, and survival tips once in the water, participants were also taught about safe fishing practices, maintaining water quality, and riverbank erosion prevention.  Students rotated through learning stations over a four hour period which included time in the swimming pool to teach important points.
