Happy Kids Enjoy a Day of Fishing at the Annual Genoa NFH Kids Fishing Derby.
Midwest Region, May 12, 2007
Print Friendly Version

A group of 125 kids and 75 parents enjoyed a great morning, after a momentary light rain shower which did not dampen their enthusiasm for fishing for the big one. The Annual Genoa National Fish Hatchery Kids Fishing Derby started with informational booths staffed by various Federal and State personnel, Sportsmen's clubs and volunteers..

Displays and presentations included fish dissections and anatomy, fish cleaning and filleting, how to fish, wildlife identification and a fly fishing demonstration. Lots of parents were present to cheer their children on, assist in removing hooks, baiting up and moral support.

The hatchery stocked 1,500 rainbow trout in a pond for the kids to catch. Prizes were awarded for the biggest and smallest fish with everyone getting a hat, t-shirt and goody bag, so everyone was a winner.

The Genoa NFH is located on Highway 35 outside of the town of Genoa about 20 miles south of La Crosse. Lots of cars traveled along the highway stopped to watch and participate if they had kids. The weather cooperated and created a beautiful sunny day which aided having a big turnout. A cookout was provided by the staff and friends of the Upper Mississippi River Fishery Services.
