Eastern Neck National Wildlife RefugeConducts Earth Day Clean Up and Birding Course
Northeast Region, April 21, 2007
Print Friendly Version

To celebrate Earth Day, Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge held a cleanup and Birding for Beginners course/hike.  The clean up occurred in the area of the Chesapeake Bay shoreline north of Ingleside Recreation Area.  The area had recently been cleared by a prescribed burn, enabling a more successful cleanup due to exposed debris.  Previous high tides assisted the volunteers by washing debris to the shoreline.  This cleanup was important due to the increased visibility of the refuge shoreline by kayak/canoe users enjoying the new water trail around the island.  Three members of the Friends of Eastern Neck, two community members and one Service employee participated in the morning cleanup which resulted in the disposal of ten large bags of trash, tires and wood.  This trash contained many recyclable materials.

Nine individuals participated in the Birding for Beginners course/hike which was led by refuge volunteers who are also members of the Kent County Bird Club.  The participants were delighted to see many migratory songbirds and a variety of raptors.
