New Wetland Completed at Hay Hollow Wash on San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge
Southwest Region, April 25, 2007
Print Friendly Version
The refuge has completed work on a new wetland habitat in the Hay Hollow Wash area of the Refuge.  This new pond brings the total of wetlands on the refuge to thirteen.  The new pond is the second pond to go in at Hay Hollow and is approximately 1.3 acres. the new wetland was created to provide habitat for some of the endangered fish that the refuge is charged with protecting, such as the Yaqui chub, Yaqui topminnow and Yaqui beautiful shiner.  The new wetland will also provide habitat for migratory water fowl and shore birds on their summer and winter migrations.  The new wetland was completed with the generous help of Phelps Dodge Incorporated.  Phelps Dodge donated the clay that was used to line the new pond to prevent water loss due to seepage.
