KODIAK: Animal Facts Game Nets a Crowd at ComFish Expo
Alaska Region, May 7, 2007
Print Friendly Version
The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge booth at the annual fisheries trade show “ComFish” was a big hit for children and adults of all ages.  The Refuge booth gave ComFish attendees an opportunity to talk to staff about the new Refuge visitor center, Refuge public use cabins, hunting and fishing, and Salmon Camp (the Refuge’s summer science day camp).  The Kodiak community was excited to look over plans and see pictures of the progress of the new Refuge Visitor Center, currently under construction.

A wheel of fortune style game board, constructed by Jeff Lewis, Refuge Marine Machinery Mechanic, proved a great drawing card, and Refuge Staff quizzed kids of all ages on their knowledge of Kodiak’s flora and fauna.  Kids and their parents enjoyed competing against each other and walked away with some new knowledge.  Education Coordinator, Sue Knoth, was excited to see that last years Salmon Campers were on top of their salmon facts.  The kids returned again and again to answer questions ranging from “True or False:  A salmon dies after spawning. (Answer – true.)” to “What is an animal native to Kodiak Island that is not a bird but can fly? (Answer – little brown bat).”  All game participants won a Refuge poster and were given information about the 2007 Salmon Camp season.
