AK PENINSULA: Local Students Win Statewide Calendar Contest

The 2008 Alaska Migratory Bird Calendar will have three literature and two poster entries from students representing the Alaska Peninsula and Becharof National Wildlife Refuges. Bristol Bay second grader Everett Evanoff, Bristol Bay eighth grader Cody Cossairt, and Newhalen School eleventh grader Paul Askoak were among the 12 Literature winners.  In addition, Egegik sixth grader Arimie LeFevere and Pedro Bay tenth grader Valyne Shugak won for their art entries. These entries will be displayed in the upcoming 2008 Migratory Bird Calendar. The Refuges had a record breaking 274 entries submitted from fifteen local schools. The calendar contest is open to students in kindergarten though twelfth grade. Entries are divided and judged in four different age groups. Age groups include; kindergarten through second grade, third through fifth grade, sixth through eighth grade and ninth through twelfth grade. The entries went through an initial judging at the "Refuge" level on February 23rd. The 24 winning entries were then sent to Anchorage to compete at the "State" level judging on April 10th. Both the Refuge winners and final Calendar winners receive prizes, ribbons and certificates.
