Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge Hosts Wilderness Class
Northeast Region, April 17, 2007
Print Friendly Version

On April 17, 2007 Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge Biologist Maurry Mills presented a session on Wilderness Management to a class from the University of Maine at Machias.  The eight students and their instructor were part of a Wilderness Recreation Class.

Principles of wilderness management, and the values of wilderness were among topics discussed.  Over 7200 acres of the refuge have been designated as federal wilderness area, where mechanized equipment and vehicles are prohibited.  The airsheds over both wilderness areas are designated Class I, and the refuge maintains several air quality monitoring systems.

Students view a power point presentation, introducing them to the refuge's habitat management programs conducted on the non-wilderness areas.  A summary of the research and wildlife monitoring activities conducted by the biological staff was also presented.

After discussing the refuge's comprehensive conservation planning efforts, students were  invited to provide input to the plan.
