Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge officially dedicated the new salt flat observation tower and restrooms on Wednesday, April 4, 2007.

The metal observation tower and the restrooms were removed in 2006 due to safety concerns. The new observation tower allows visitors to get a better view of the salt flats, including peering at birds on the lake through scopes and binoculars. Information panels at the top give a brief introduction to the history and ecology of the area. The new tower and restrooms are fully accessible for all visitors.

Newly elected Alfalfa County Commissioner, Doug Murrow cut the ribbon during the dedication. Also attending the event was refuge volunteer Svein Hvamb, Cherokee City Manager Brandon Wright, County Commissioner A.J. Rexroat, his wife, Carolyn and Great Salt Plains Assocation Representative Laura Girty.
