The theme of this year's PAEE conference (April 12-15, Wilkes-Barre PA) was "No Child Left Inside," a theme perfectly suited for Chesapeake Bay Field Office's Schoolyard Habitat Program. CBFO biologist Carolyn Kolstad presented this step-by step approach to creating valuable wildlife habitat on school grounds. Using the Schoolyard Habitat Program Project Guide, steps were laid out to create meadows, forest or wetlands. The formal presentation was followed by an interactive activity showing educators how they and their students can conduct a habitat assessment on their site. This presentation has been in demand by environmental educators in other states as well. Participants left with the knowledge and motivation to start their own restoration project at school along with resources they will need like the Schoolyard Habitat Project Guide and Native Plants for Wildlife Habitat and Conservation Landscaping Guide. Schoolyard habitats help to promote the stewardship objectives of the Chesapeake Bay Program partnership and the Schoolyard Habitat Program is also a critical tool to fulfilling the Service's commitment of connecting people with nature.
