Kansas City members of Alpha Delta Kappa, an International Honorary Organization for Women Educators, gained new insight into the meaning of their motto, “Flying with Eagles,” and the importance of environmental education, after an informative presentation by Missouri Ecological Services Field Supervisor Charlie Scott, April 9^th. 

Scott provided the educators with information and classroom materials on the bald eagle, while discussing the importance of wildlife and nature in child development. Scott engaged the audience, composed of both active and retired educators from elementary and secondary levels, in a dialogue of the popular book Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder by Richard Louv.

Louv’s book sparked discussion on the dire need for both educators and parents to instill the value of outdoor experiences in the lives of their students and children.  Scott highlighted the prioritization by the Service to combat the environmental apathy that exists today, and brainstormed with the audience on how to incorporate stimulating educational programs in their schools to address the problem.
