The Fox and Kishwaukee River Watershed Habitat Restoration Program was established in 2000 with initial funds from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Chicago Field Office and U.S Environmental Protection Agency Region 5.

Since that time additional funds have been provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Chicago District.

This is a 75% cost share program administered by local Soil and Water Conservation Districts in cooperation with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

The program is aimed at smaller habitat restoration projects which also benefit water quality on public or private land.

In March 2007, the Technical Oversight Committee awarded funding to 4 projects on private land that will result in the restoration of 56 acres of prairie, woodland, and riparian wetland, and stabilization and restoration of 600 feet of Nippersink Creek.
