The Rio Grande Joint Venture (Tamaulipan thornscrub ecosystem) coordinated by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) held a two-day meeting at The Nature Conservancy (TNC) facility in Brownsville, Texas.  Several entities from Texas/Mexico attended the meeting including personnel from TPWD, TNC, American Bird Conservancy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Corpus Christi Ecological Services Field Office - Alamo Sub-office, Austin Ecological Services Botanist, Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge (LANWR), Lower Rio Grande Valley NWR (LRGVNWR), Pronatura (NGO) from Tamaulipas, Mexico, and the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Monterrey Mexico.  The first day the American Bird Conservancy gave a presentation about funds available for habitat restoration, easements, conservation agreements with landowners and purchases of land for conservation in U.S. and Mexico.  The group identified important areas of land having priority conservation needs on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border.  The second day was a discussion of all the vegetation types existing in the Tamaulipan thornscrub community, and the birds and the threats associated with each type of habitat.  The group also identified bird species having priority research and management needs.
