Analysis of Aging Error Presented to the MSC by Service Biologist
Midwest Region, March 14, 2007
Print Friendly Version

Green Bay FRO biologist Dale Hanson presented a method to quantitatively assess aging error in fishery data to the Modeling SubCommittee (MSC), during the March 13th-15th MSC meeting held in Roscommon, MI.

The method applies models to describe aging error and bias associated with a reader’s age estimates for a sample of fish.

Further, the model uses this information to predict the actual age distributions of fish in the sample.  This research will be used to improve the process through which fishery age composition data is generated for the statistical catch at age models that are used to develop harvest limits in Treaty waters of the Upper Great Lakes.
