Law Enforcement Success at San Bernardino NWR
Southwest Region, January 1, 2007
Print Friendly Version
Law enforcement personnel at San Bernardino NWR issued very few refuge regulation citations over the course of the year, but were instrumental in providing border protection.  Refuge law enforcement assisted various federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in stemming the flow of illegal immigrants across the border and more importantly making it harder for drug smugglers to successfully carry out their mission.  For calendar year 2006 the refuge issued two notice of violations and two other incidents were turned over to the Arizona Game and Fish Department resulting in another notice of violation issued by the state.  Incidents involving border issues resulted in 21,949 pounds of marijuana being seized and 3,498 illegal immigrants apprehended.  While not the primary duty of refuge law enforcement officers, border issues do make up the majority of the work that they perform.  Their success makes the refuges safer for people who visit them and for employees to carry out their duties.
