San Bernardino NWRand Arizona Fisheries Resource Office Partner with Local Ranchers on Water Resource Project to Benefit Listed Species
Southwest Region, February 22, 2007
Print Friendly Version

Marty Underwood from the Arizona Fisheries Resource Office along with Refuge Manager Bill Radke toured the Bar Boot and 99 Bar Ranches on February 22nd to assess a water resource project for the ranches.  The project is being proposed as a condition of the proposed Safe Harbor Agreement for the ranches.  The SHA is being proposed to allow the management of four federally listed species: the endangered Yaqui fishes (Yaqui chub (Gila pupurea) and the Yaqui topminnow (Poeciliopsis occidentalis sonoriensis)), the Chiricahua leopard frog (Rana chiricahuensis), and the endangered Huachuca water umbel (Lilaeopsis schaffneriana var. recurva).  The water control structures will help provide the proper conditions for the rearing and survival of the Yaqui fishes as well as provide habitat for the Chiricahua leopard frog and another site for Huachuca water umbel.
