2007 Sedimentations Conference Announcement
2007 Sedimentations Conference Announcement

Art Culture Nature (ACN) has chosen the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex's Kettle Pond Visitor Center as the site of their 2007 conference.  ACN is a national interdisciplinary organization that brings together artists and teachers of the arts, as well as scientists and environmentalists who are interested in the study of the connections between the arts and environmental studies.  This year's conference will focus on connections between ecology and land-use history over time.  Central to this theme is the Fish and Wildlife Service's newly constructed eco-friendly facility and the surrounding refuge lands, which now harbor important migratory bird habitats, but which have a rich history in their glacial formation, stewardship by the Narragansett people, a long colonial history, and mid-20th century transformations to a military base and later re-transformation back to wildlife habitats.

The conference runs from May 18-20, 2007, and is co-chaired by Ana Flores, the Rhode Island Refuge Complex's Artist in Residence, who has contributed a year-long environmental lecture series, interpretive sculptures, and curriculum items to the visitor center's offerings.
