Journal Entry   Back Update for Arizona Ecological Services Office (AESO) partnership with Thunderbird High School on Endangered Species Education. Southwest Region, February 27, 2007 Print Friendly Version Freshmen and sophmore students from Thunderbird High School have completed several assignments as part of a yearlong research project on special status species and the Endangered Species Act.  Each student selected a species to research and present papers on threats to their species of interest, and has contacted/interviewed AESO and Arizona Game and Fish species leads to discuss the threats to their species and how those threats specifically affect life history traits of their species. Upcoming assignments for this project include a "status of the species" write-up, and the creation of a mock biological opinion for an action that may adversely affect each student's species.  This final paper will be presented orally in class.  Simultaneously, AESO staff are seeking opportunities for Thunderbird students to participate in field activities for special-status species.  Several students have expressed personal interest and/or for extra credit on the project.  This project is a pilot curriculum designed to integrate wildlife/ecology/natural resource issues and outdoor opportunities with urban students of varying socioeconomic status, and of varying race and ethnicity in a greater effort to promote an interest in wildlife and the outdoors.
