U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Northeast Fishery Center Biologists Gaining Novel Information on Movements of Imperiled Atlantic Sturgeon.
Northeast Region, February 27, 2007
Print Friendly Version
Biologists at the Northeast Fishery Center in Lamar, Pa. are gaining novel information on movements of adult Atlantic sturgeon through the use of pop-up tags, which employ satellite-mediated transfer of archived data stored in the tag while the fish are at large in the environment.  Tags deployed on adult sturgeon in the Hudson River in summer 2006 are now releasing from the fish and transmitting stored depth and temperature data to the ARGOS satellite.  Fish biologists at Lamar, as well as cooperating scientists in the New York Dept of Environmental Conservation and The Wildlife Conservation Fund are now receiving the data from the satellite company.  The data can be used to reconstruct the probable movements and habitat preferences of the adult fish between tag deployment and now.  Four more tags are programmed to pop off wild fish later this year and transmit their information.  This data is crucial in illuminating river residence times, habitat preferences,  and offshore movements of these imperiled fish.  This information may be useful in eliminating or decreasing harmful by-catch of sturgeon in nearshore fisheries.
