Search and Rescue Training at the Nulhegan Basin Division of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, January 30, 2007
Print Friendly Version

On January 30, 2007 the Nulhegan Basin Division of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge hosted the second search and rescue (SAR) training session at the refuge in two months.  In attendance were 15 SAR team members including VT State Troopers, Game Wardens, and Deputy Sheriff's.  The training was coordinated by Service Officer Tom Laskowski and SAR Team Leader Lt. Jocelyn Stohl Vermont State Police (VSP).  Search and rescue training at the refuge was deemed important due to 2 separate incidents involving lost hunters on the refuge, and 1 adjacent to it, during fall of 2006.

The premise to the training was a scenario where the role player (missing snowmobiler) was to ride a snowmobile to a prearranged location and pull it off trail (to appear broken down) and walk to a camp (abandoned cabin)  approximately .5 miles away,  leaving tracks in the snow.  When found she was to appear hypothermic and not regain conciousness until the SAR team performed re-warming procedures, such as making her a warm drink and using emergency blankets.   The scenario for the team stated that a snowmobiler never returned home the night before and the search was to be conducted on refuge land.  It took just a few hours for the team to systematically search all of the refuge before discovering the broken down sled and their victim and get her safely re-warmed and out.
