Arlington Field Office working with Corps of Engineers on Whitney Lake Fire Policy
Southwest Region, February 15, 2007
Print Friendly Version
On February 15, 2007, Sean Edwards of the Arlington, Texas Field Office met with Corps of Engineers staff, Texas Forest Service staff, and private landowners whose residences are adjacent to public land to reexamine the existing fire-break policy at Whitney Lake, Texas.  The Forest Service has placed Whitney Lake on its list of federal lands at high risk from wildfire.  This has inspired local residents to request that the Corps allow for reduction of fuel loads on bordering public lands.  The landowners were mindful of concerns of potential impacts to the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and other wildlife and were enthusiastic in developing a plan which would ensure the safety of their residences without compromising the integrity of valuable wildlife habitat on public lands.  The meeting ended with an invitation for the Service to offer a presentation on endangered species and other local wildlife concerns at an upcoming homeowner’s meeting.
