A variety of events were held at Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge during National Wildlife Refuge Week, October 7-14. 

The week started with a 5K-fun run/walk held on a portion of the auto tour route, from the Davis Creek Observation Tower to the Pelican Pool south dam and return.  There were 22 entrants and the top runners were divided into three categories. 

The Big Sit was held at the Davis Creek Observation Tower on the 8th with 24 birders counted 61 species from 12:01 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.  This is the 3rd year for the event and was the highest number of species counted since its inception in 2004.

On the 10th, 27 students from the Mid-Buchanan High School Student Council volunteered to repair and improve the Callow Memorial hiking trail.  The office was open on weekends, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for the 8 weeks, staffed by volunteers.  The first weekend included a bird carving demonstration, prairie workday and volunteer recognition picnic.

On October the 14th, the Outdoor Classroom was officially dedicated.  Former Friends of Squaw Creek President George L. Scheil is the driving force to have an outdoor classroom facility built for students from Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas. 

He personally raised the money for the building.  It was dedicated to his name the 14th in a formal event attended by many interested visitors.
