Squaw Creek NWR Participates in Annual 'Big Sit'
Midwest Region, October 8, 2006
Print Friendly Version

Squaw Creek NWR staff hosted and particpated in recent Big Sit, an annual international birding event hosted by Bird Watcher's Digest and founded by the New Haven, Connecticute Bird Club.

The object is to tally as many bird species as possible that can be seen or heard within a designated spot during a 24 hour period.  The event is free and open to every person or bird club in any country.

There are currently three sites in Missouri including Squaw Creek NWR, Swan Lake NWR and the Binder Lake near Jefferson City.

The Davis Creek Observation Tower has served as the location for the Big Sit the past 3 years.

This is the third year that members of the Midland Empire Audubon Soceity have partipicated at Squaw Creek.  It was done during the first day of National Wildlife Refuge Week - October 10.

Twenty-four people observed 61 species of the birds, the most since this event was initiated in 2004.  The count went from 12:01 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.

This event also provides an opportunity for birders to learn more about Squaw Creek and other National Wildlife Refuges as well as the Friends of Squaw Creek.
