In 2006, a total of eight of eighteen areas with vireo nesting habitat on the Refuge were surveyed from April 15th through June 15th.  An attempt was made to count all the male territories within each designated area.  The numbers located allows an estimate of the total number of vireos nesting refuge-wide.

Areas surveyed and territories observed 2006:

East Charons Garden                162

Dog Run Hollow                        36

Quetone Point                            69

Pinchot Loop                             19

North Mountain Wilderness      120

East Side Quanah Hills             179

Bushman/Lauramac                  387

Lost Lake                                     6

                                                978

The net change within the 2006 survey areas and the same areas surveyed in 2005 was 978 territories in 2006 and 949 territories in 2005.  This represented a net increase of 23 territories in 2006 or a 2.4 overall increase.

The estimated population of mated pairs refuge-wide in 2006 is 1,503 vireos.
