Oklahoma Ecological Service Biologists Coordinate with Oklahoma Biological Survey Staff To Develop Catalog
Southwest Region, January 11, 2007
Print Friendly Version
Service staff met with Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) and the Oklahoma Biological Survey (OBS) staff involved with the Data Catalog to get a better understanding of the technical aspects this system, and to provide additional input pertaining to design suggestions and the Service’s role as both data providers and data users.

Suggestions included:

1)     Adding keywords categories such as topic, location and taxa into the required portion of the basic metadata

2)     Making .pdf documents text searchable to increase the utility of scanned documents

3)     Making all documents within database keyword searchable independent of file type

4)     Various security features

5)     Promoting voluntary metadata standards for all future data collection

6)     Voluntary identification of information quality by general categories

In the future, OBS plans to coordinate with Oklahoma ES biologists to help them determine user classes, and sort out how people will use the system as both data providers and data users allowing a better design of the user interface to meet staff needs.

The intent of the catalog is to take various species data, including but not limited to listed and/or sensitive species.  A working version of the database is expected to be in operation by June of 2007
