Media Coverage for Wertheim Nationla Wildlife RefugeManagement Activities
Northeast Region, January 8, 2007
Print Friendly Version
On January 8,  Refuge Manager Deborah Long responded to questions from a Long Island Advance freelance reporter, Linda Leuzzi regarding Open Marsh Water Management (OMWM) projects planned or underway on Long Island.  OMWM is a management tool used in coastal wetlands to control mosquitoes by eliminating/reducing breeding areas and the need for application of pesticides.  Ms. Leuzzi was specifically interested in the results of OMWM techniques used at Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge as part of a pilot demonstration study; the goal of the Wertheim project is to reduce or eliminate pesticide use on the refuge through larval control by naturally-occurring fish, restore the natural hydrology of the marsh and enhance biological diversity.  The article, which appeared in the January 18, 2007 issue is a follow-up to an earlier article Ms. Leuzzi wrote in May 2006.
