Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge Conducts 28th Annual Mid-Winter Eagle Survey
Northeast Region, January 11, 2007
Print Friendly Version
Staff and volunteers at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge successfully completed the refuge's 28th annual mid-winter eagle survey on January 11, 2007.  This collaborative effort involved a total of 6 refuge staff and 26 volunteers.  Survey participants were scattered across the refuge at stationary observation sites as part of this two-part survey.  The non-roost (morning) count produced a total of 116 eagles consisting of 61 adult bald eagles, 36 immature bald eagles, 1 adult golden eagle, 1 immature golden eagle, and 17 eagles that could not be identified to species.  The roost (evening) count produced 92 eagles consisting of 51 adult bald eagles, 25 immature bald eagles, and 16 eagles that could not be identified to species.  Survey results were typical of previous years, indicating the trend of a gradually increasing winter eagle population at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.
