Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge'sBig Game Hunt A Success

Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley, NY wrapped up another successful season of big game hunting of white-tailed deer on January 11, 2007.  The program, in its second year, attracted individuals from across Long Island to participate in this unique hunting experience.  With an ever-increasing population and sprawling development, hunting opportunities on Long Island are few and far between.  Vital to the success and safety of the hunt were the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, National Park Service Fire Island National Seashore, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service law enforcement officers who patrolled and enforced the laws and regulations governing the hunt.  

One hundred two hunters participated in the 12 days of hunting (10 days of archery and 2 days of shotgun) offered by the refuge.  Efforts aimed at increasing hunter participation in the program paid off with 20 more hunters participating than the previous year.  A total of 46 deer were taken, helping significantly to reduce the overpopulated herd on the refuge.  Comments received by the hunters were overwhelmingly positive; suggestions for future hunts will be discussed by refuge staff in order to improve hunter satisfaction while meeting the refuge's biological management objectives.
