Secretary of the Interior visits Arizona to review border issues

Secretary of the Interior, Dirk Kempthorne, met in Phoenix with officials from Interior agencies on January 2, 2007, to discuss issues associated with illegal immigration along the U.S./ Mexico border.  Each DOI agency provided a brief powerpoint presentation on the key issues that they are facing.  Issues included increased crime and law enforcement response; trash, abandoned vehicles, and illegal roads in wilderness areas; adverse effects of illegal traffic on wildlife and plants; the potential for trespass cattle and smuggled wildlife to transmit disease in the U.S.; and support of vehicle barriers and opposition to pedestrian fences in non-urban areas.  Regional Director Tuggle provided the presentation on the effects of illegal immigration to Refuges and plants and wildlife along the entire border.  On January 3, 2007, the Secretary flew along the border to see some of the issues discussed at the meeting.
