Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex and Suffolk County Works are a Perfect Match
Northeast Region, September 30, 2006
Print Friendly Version
The Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex and the Suffolk County Department of Labor have established a partnership that benefits both the complex and local individuals in need of work experience for employment.  The Suffolk Works Employment Program provides participants with transportation and supervision to assist with custodial, maintenance and biological projects on refuge lands.  During the 2006 fiscal year, Suffolk Works participants provided 2,172 hours of volunteer labor to projects including trail maintenance, painting buildings, trash pick up, equipment cleaning, leaf raking, and planting spartina for marsh restoration.  The program's contributions to the refuge complex total over $39,000 for the fiscal year.  These projects would not have been completed had it not been for the program support received from Suffolk County.
