NRDAInitiated for Releases from Dow Chemical Into Tittabawassee River, Michigan, and Downstream Areas
Midwest Region, November 9, 2006
Print Friendly Version

On November 8, 2006, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, State of Michigan, and Saginaw Chippewa Tribe, acting as trustees for natural resources, described their plans to proceed with a Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) for the Tittabawassee River and related areas. During their public meeting in Saginaw, Michigan, they also released the “Preassessment Screen and Determination for Natural Resource Damages Related To Releases At Or From The Dow Chemical Company Manufacturing Plant Property At Midland, Michigan” documenting the decision.

With the oversight of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and U.S. EPA, Dow is proceeding with interim remedial actions and remedial investigations being conducted as part of a corrective action process for the past releases of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans from their plant property.

The trustees have begun close work with Dow, MDEQ and U.S. EPA to incorporate the trustees’ data needs, technical expertise, and NRDA concerns into the ongoing corrective action process as much as is practical.

The Preassessment Screen document is available at http://www.deq.state.mi.us/documents/deq-whm-hwp-tittabawassee-river-NRDA-preassessment-10-13-06.pdf.
