NATIONWIDE 27 PERMIT ASSISTANCE
Southwest Region, October 6, 2006
Print Friendly Version

Coastal Program Staff from the Corpus Christi Ecological Services Field Office assisted a private homeowner in applying for a Nationwide 27 Permit from the Corps of Engineers to protect and restore a small rookery island in Salt Lake, Aransas County.  In the past the island has supported as many as 14 pairs of Great Blue Herons; however due to erosion the island now only has available nesting substrate for 4 pairs.  Several nearby homeowners, a local Boy Scout troop, and Coastal Program staff will protect the Island by constructing a sackcrete retaining wall around the island.  Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program staff will build nesting platforms on the island to increase available habitat.
