DEDICATION OF PACKERY CHANNEL
Southwest Region, October 6, 2006
Print Friendly Version

On October 6, 2006 the public was invited to the dedication event for the Packery Channel Project, more formally known as the North Padre Island Storm Damage Reduction and Environmental Restoration Project.  Pat Clements represented the Corpus Christi Ecological Services Field Office at the event.  The bulk of the construction work has been completed by the Corps of Engineers.  Still to be finished are such components as hand railings on the jetty walkways, repairs to the interior bulkheads, and an access road and parking lot to a public boat ramp.  According to the project EIS, once the Corps has completed initial construction and channel dredging, the City of Corpus Christi will assume responsibility for future maintenance dredging and repairs to Packery Channel.

Still to be completed are 3 years of post-construction monitoring in the Mollie Beattie Coastal Habitat Preserve, and 1000 acre of mixed coastal habitats owned by the Texas General Land Office.  The monitoring is being done by the City of Corpus Christi to document any impacts of Packery Channel on the preserve.  The Mollie Beattie Preserve adjoins Packery Channel on the north side, west of State Highway 361.  The first of the 3-years of monitoring is scheduled to begin in November 2006.
