On Saturday, August 26, 2006 the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge Friends Group hosted a refuge open house, in hopes to educate the local community about the refuge and its associated Friends Group. At the event visitors learned about current refuge issues and projects while Friends Group members provided tours around the refuge. Programs for the day included a brief talk about the refuge, tours of the refuge, a butterfly garden talk, and nature walks. Children also participated in a nature scavenger hunt and animal track casting. Ten Friends members and volunteers were on hand throughout the day to lead tours, walks and talks with the visitors. The public also enjoyed watching local wood carvers and landscape painters between programs and tours. Approximately 60 members of the public attended the event.
