The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Partners with West Virginia Department of Natural Resources and The Canaan Valley Institute to Develop a Conservation Strategy for the Upper Blackwater River in Tucker County West Virginia
Northeast Region, October 3, 2006
Print Friendly Version
On October 2 and 3, 2006 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists from the Appalachian Partnership Coordination Office, Maryland Fisheries Resources Office, Gloucester Fisheries Resources Office, and Regional Fisheries program met with fisheries biologists from the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources and land managers from the Canaan Valley Institute to outline a plan for developing a fisheries management strategy for the upper Blackwater River basin.  Currently much of the basin is managed for natural resource conservation.  The Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge manages 15, 245 acres and the Canaan Valley Institute manages 3,208 acres.  The Blackwater River and its tributaries reach all corners of these properties.  An opportunity exists to improve recreational fishing opportunities of the Valley through habitat restoration and targeted fisheries management for the main stem of Blackwater and a series of headwater tributaries.  The three partners have built a team of fisheries and watershed planning experts to develop a scoping report to identify the state of the watershed, the need(s) for coordinated watershed management action, and recommendations for future collaboration.  The report will be prepared by January 31, 2007, at which time the team will begin reaching out to other partners and landowners in the watershed to develop a management strategy.
