Former Airmen Reunite and Reminisce at the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, July 29, 2006
Print Friendly Version
On July 29, 2006, 12 former members of the Security Police Squadron, K-9 Section, held a reunion at the former Loring Air Force Base, now the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge. The men were a band of brothers stationed together in the early 1960's. They even invited the former base barber of 30 years tenure to join the reunion. The president of the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge Friends Group, also a former Security Policeman performing duty at the base for 11 years, gave them a three hour auto tour of their former haunts that is now a national wildlife refuge. Although much has changed, the men were thrilled to see the old weapons storage area they secured during the Cold War era. The dormitories, BX and business area of the former base is now all a grassland habitat. This is just one of many Air Force reunion tours that have been given at the refuge over the years. The area remains very important to the men. The former airmen, from around the United States, were impressed with the high standard of stewardship and maintenance of the former base that harbors so many memories for these veterans.  The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is happy and proud to continue to allow access to the refuge for future reunions.
