Ozark Plateau Twin Cave
Southwest Region, October 4, 2006
Print Friendly Version
Members of the Tulsa Regional Oklahoma Grotto (the local chapter of the National Speleological Society) were taken to Twin Cave to watch approximately 20,000 federally listed endangered gray bats emerge from this important maternity cave.  After the bats left, they were taken through a back entrance of the cave to an area not used by the gray bats into the largest cave room (around 400'x150'x90') in Oklahoma.  The group included Service volunteers who helped build the appropriately designed gate on Twin Cave as well as a number of other caves, and have helped map Service caves.  Twin Cave is actually owned by The Nature Conservancy but is managed cooperatively with the refuge.
