Journal Entry   Back Sentry milk-vetch Recovery Plan Southwest Region, September 27, 2006 Print Friendly Version AESO plant ecologist, Mima Falk,  worked cooperatively with staff of Grand Canyon NP to complete the Sentry milk-vetch recovery plan and initiate work on recovery actions to ensure the continued survival of this rare plant species. Sentry milk-vetch is found only on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon scattered in two populations, with a third occurrence of only a few plants.  The main population (Maricopa Point) contains 332 individuals, there are approximately 220 plants at "Lollipop Point", and 2-3 plants at Grandview.  In total, there are currently less than 600 individauls of this species. This past summer, FWS and the National Park Service monitored the population at Maricopa Point, conducted inventory work along the south rim (including relocating plants at Grandview, a site thought to be extirpated), collected sentry milk-vetch seed at Maricopa Point and "Lollipop Point", and located potential introduction sites for an experimental introduction effort.  Mima, in collaboration with the Arboretum at Flagstaff, wrote a grant that was funded with section 6 dollars, to establish an ex situ Sentry milk-vetch population at the Arboretum.  This will be an important first step towards an introduction program that we are currently seeking funding for.  In addition, a pre-proposal for the introduction effort was submitted to the Grand Canyon Park Foundation.  The species' information collected in the spring/summer of 2006 was used to update the draft recovery plan, which was signed by our Regional Director and the Park Superintendent at the end of September 2006.
