Youth Conservation Corps Builds New Observation Platform at Pondicherry Division of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, August 18, 2006
Print Friendly Version

Local students in the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program spent five weeks working at the Pondicherry Division where they constructed a new observation platform at a popular hiking destination at Cherry Pond. In addition, the crew improved the Cohos Trail by clearing brush and fixing erosion problems, painted newly installed vehicle gates to improve visibility, released biological control beetles on purple loosestrife, and completed landscaping around the division's informational kiosks. The students also learned about habitats and wildlife at the division from high school teacher Jenn Barton and Friends of Pondicherry member David Gavotski.

Two other YCC crews spent a week in August working on the Calf Island Unit of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge.  The group spent their workdays putting siding on and painting the pavilion, cleaning up the island, and demolishing old floating docks.  In the evenings they learned about the McKinney refuge, the importance of near-shore islands to wildlife in the Long Island Sound, and spent time with YCC crews from the Nulhegan Basin Division and McKinney Refuge.

At the end of the season, two students gave a presentation about the crew's summer at the Pondicherry Division open house.
