Journal Entry   Back Annual simultaneous roost count of the endangered lesser long-nosed bat Southwest Region, August 19, 2006 Print Friendly Version  The Arizona Ecological Services Field Office participated in Arizona's annual simultaneous roost count of the endangered lesser long-nosed bat (Leptonycteris curasoae yerbabuenae).  Of the 28 species of bats found in Arizona, the lesser long-nosed bat is one of only two nectar/fruit eating species (the Mexican long-tongued bat, Choeronycteris mexicana, is the other).  Bat researchers and agency partners, under the direction of the Arizona Game and Fish Department, conduct an annual simultaneous count of late summer roosts used by the lesser long-nosed bat.  During this time of year, the bats are foraging on century plants (Agave spp.) and will often change roost locations to take advantage of available forage resources.  In order to get the most accurate count possible, a simultaneous count of known roosts is held on the same evening to reduce double counting that could occur as a result of roost switching.   Ten roosts in Arizona are counted, as well as one roost in northern Mexico and two roosts in far southwestern New Mexico.  Count summaries are not yet completed, but indications are that the numbers of lesser long-nosed bats appear to be down, likely in response to a significant reduction in agave flowers available this year as a result of ongoing drought.     Contact Info: Martin Valdez, 505-248-6599, martin_valdez@fws.gov Send to: From: Notes: ..........................................................................................
