Sevilleta NWR Helps with Local Flooding
Southwest Region, September 12, 2006
Print Friendly Version
Heavy equipment operators Rodney Chavez, EEO's Ken Wolf and Rich Calamusso and volunteer Bill Wethington from Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge assisted the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District repair broken levees near the Rio Grande during unusually heavy rains.  The refuge lent dozers and personnel to clear mud and debris and shore up a levee break after water rushed down an arroyo and into the system of levees and drains.  The volume was too much for the system and caused repairs to be required three different times after a series of significant rain events. Other agencies pitched in to help including Bureau of Land Management, Bosque del Apache NWR and State Forestry.
