BloomingtonEcological ServicesField Office Helps Indiana DNR Collect Genetic Material From Clubshell Mussels
Midwest Region, November 2, 2005
Print Friendly Version

A biologist from the Bloomington, Indiana, Ecological Services Field Office assisted the State's Non-game Aquatic Biologist in collecting mantle clips from the Federally endangered clubshell mussel (Pleurabema clava) as part of a reintroduction project for the mussel in the midwest.

The collection was made in November of 2005 from clubshell mussels in the upper Tippecanoe River in northcentral Indiana.

The mantle clips provide tissue for genetic analysis in order to understand the relationships between various midwest populations and to help determine the best source of mussels to use for breeding and reintroduction purposes.

The tissue samples are being analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey.
