Salmon Fry Stocking of the Penobscot River
Northeast Region, June 2, 2006
Print Friendly Version
The Atlantic salmon has been extirpated from most of its native rivers in the Gulf of Maine due to dam construction in the early 1900's and water pollution in the 1950s. Thanks to clean water legislation, improved fish passage and citizen supported cooperative restoration programs are underway on many of these rivers. Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery holds sea run Penobscot River Atlantic salmon broodstock and produces eggs and fry for stocking in support of the restoration goals of the Maine Atlantic Salmon Restoration and Management Plan. This year Craig Brook Hatchery liberated 1,477,118 fry in the Penobscot River starting on May 8 and ending on June 1, 2006. All 12 stocking trips were coordinated and implemented with the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission.
